Ruffled Lamp Shade Tutorial

Hey everyone! I have another tutorial for you today. (And an update on our remodel!) I'm sure you've all seen the ruffled lamp shade tutorials floating around the blogosphere. I have been looking at these for a while, wondering what lamp shade in my house I could make into a ruffled masterpiece. I finally got my chance during our master bedroom remodel!

You might remember this beauty from my thrift store finds post a month ago. I got it for a steal of $10. I know it was steal because Target has the same one for $40! Anyways, it had this really tall, ugly shade on it that I knew I wanted to replace.

And I scored again a few days later when I found this shade at Goodwill for $3.99.

So I researched how to do ruffles. There are a lot of tutorials out there about how to make a ruffle, but I'm not great with a sewing machine, so I called my best friend and asked her to show me how. She figured it out in about .02 seconds and I got down to business.

I used leftover fabric from my upholstered box spring, so it would tie in well with the room. Cut your fabric into strips. Mine were about 3" wide. Turn your sewing machine to the setting where it's making long stitches, then sew along 1 edge. My stitch is about 5/8" from the edge. (Approximately... because I can't sew straight lines, which is fine for this project.)

Choose one of your threads and start pulling it until you get the desired amount of ruffle all the way down the length of the fabric.

I used my hot glue gun to attach the ruffle to the shade. Start at the bottom in one corner (if your shade is square) and work your way around. Then trim off any excess fabric.

Work your way up the lamp in layers. Make sure and start at the same spot in each layer so you can face that side to the back and not see any rough edges.

The end. Super easy, right? And it looks GREAT! I can't wait to see what it looks like in our finished bedroom.

And for a little update on our upstairs renovation: we now have a hallway and doors to the bathroom and our new nursery! It's starting to really come together!
