Cleaning Schedule

I don't know about you all, but my life keeps getting more and more hectic. And with the chaos that comes with running a house, keeping a toddler entertained and fed, and a very mobile 7 month old out of mischief, I find my household chores getting pushed to the back burner and just plain forgotten about. Which is ironic because I hate, hate, hate living in a dirty house! So I came up with a plan.

I've seen lots of cleaning schedules on Pinterest, but none of the ones I looked at worked for me and what I wanted my week to look like. So I made my own and wanted to share it with you.

I even made it look pretty so I can print it and put it on my fridge.  Click here for a printable version of the cleaning schedule.

Here's the breakdown:
The things I do every day include making the beds, loading the dishwasher and running it so the dishes are clean for the next day, putting dishes away in the morning, and a general picking up (which for me is mostly toys, papers, and random clothes that get left out)

On Mondays, I pay bills and do the budget so I am up to date for the week, menu plan (once a month, see post here!), and grocery shop if I need to.

Tuesdays are devoted to the kitchen. Clean the counters, the microwave (if needed), the stove top, empty out old food in refrigerator and clean it, and bleach the sink.

Wednesdays are bathroom days. Clean the toilet (inside and out!), sink, shower, bathtub, and mirror.

I like to do all my laundry at once. I know that a lot of people like doing a load every day, but I get so frustrated if it seems like I'm not making progress on the mountain of it. So, Thursdays are laundry day. Wash, dry, fold, and put away. This is also my day to change the sheets on the bed so they can be washed.

Fridays are general cleaning. Vacuum the bedrooms and the rug in the living room, sweep and mop the wood and tile floors, and dust the living room, dining room and bedrooms.

Saturdays and Sundays are reserved for special projects around the house that my husband and I can do together, like building a mudroom bench (in progress!), cleaning windows, washing the couch covers, mowing and weeding, etc.

Do you have a cleaning schedule you stick to? Did I forget anything?

Children's Artwork Display

I know I haven't posted lately, but I promise there's a good reason! We added baby Samuel to our family at the beginning of October and it's (obviously) gotten a lot busier around here.

But more on him later. I'm not sure about you, but when my toddler sits still long enough to do an art project, they all end up piled on the counter until I throw them away. I hate throwing his art away, but I hate clutter on my counter more. So in the trash they go.

I thought about hanging something on the wall like this so I could display them, but I don't have a really good spot for a board.

So here is what I came up with. We had some old bi-fold doors that were hanging out in the basement from when we remodeled Luke's room a few years ago. We hinged them together and put them in the corner behind his toy box (sorry for the trucks busting out of the toy box, but that is how it normally looks). Then I just used clothespins to clip the artwork to the slats.

I love, love, love that it was such an easy project and it looks like a gallery where he can see his art and I don't have to throw it away!

Master Bedroom Reveal

Today's the day! My master bedroom is DONE and I finally get to show it to you all! I'm ridiculously excited. Obviously. And I'm thrilled with the way it turned out.

Be warned: there are a LOT of pictures in this post.

Here it is!

Remember what it looked like before? The first picture is what it looked like when we bought the house. And the second picture is what we had been living with for the last 4 years.

Bleh, right? I had literally hung about 3 things on the walls. A shelf with some pictures on it and 2 window frames as our headboard... which we hung too high and was very uncomfortable to lean against. That was the extent of decorating in this room. And it was SO dark with our dark green wall and our dark brown accents. We tore up the carpet about 2 years ago to reveal beautiful, unfinished hardwoods, which we had left unfinished until now.

Now, we have a beautiful light blue paint color (Benjamin Moore Arctic Blue) with white, teal and watermelon as our accent colors. Much lighter and brighter! We stained our floors dark (Minwax Dark Walnut) to offset it against the white trim. I also bought a new comforter and upholstered our box spring with fabric to match the paint (link for this tutorial at the bottom).

We added these two closets to our room. Before, there was only a tiny closet in the corner by where the door is. My husband was using that one and I was using one in the loft part of our upstairs (which is now our new nursery). Now we each have our own closet in our bedroom.

Building these closets on either side of the window also made a perfect little nook to put a chair and footstool. I totally transformed this chair, added a pillow that I sewed and made a ruffled shade to go on my thrift store lamp (check out the bottom of this post for the links to how I did all these projects, also).

For the windows, I was planning on making curtains because I had a specific idea in mind and couldn't find any that were in my budget. I wanted white curtains with nickel finish grommets that were 95" long(ish) so they would be ceiling height. I ran across some at Target while I was browsing their home decor section that were exactly what I wanted and they were on sale! So, needless to say, I bought those and saved myself the hassle of sewing curtains and adding grommets to them!

I repainted our window frames a glossy white and added fabric behind them to compliment the colors of the room and tie in with the pillows. I also painted our nightstands and the new lamps and added some accessories.  I pretty much found everything at thrift stores and garage sales, except the throw blanket. I bought that at Target.

I bought a couple of white Euro pillow shams from Amazon and made pillow covers out of different materials to put on the bed. I love the look of lots of pillows! It just makes the bed more inviting.

I'm seriously in love with the end product!

P.S. There is one spot next to my closet that I am going to put this beauty. I just have to paint it and reupholster the stool. It's going to be my dressing/makeup table! But it was a complete afterthought and I ended up getting it for $15 when I bought my chair off Craigslist, so I don't feel bad about it not being done. (And it probably won't get done until after our new baby gets here!)

More Master Bedroom Before and Afters

Our master bedroom is [this] close to being finished! I only have 2 things left on my list to do. I have to finish our headboard and paint my new dressing table and stool. I'm pretty sure only the headboard is going to get done before I have this next baby, though. (For those of you who don't know, I'm 37 weeks pregnant, as of yesterday.) I'm okay with that because the dressing table was an afterthought anyway.

But I have managed to get a lot more of my furniture and accessories done! So, I wanted to show off some of them.

My footstool for my reading corner (which you can see a preview of at the bottom of this post):

My cheap, matching lamps that I scored at a thrift store and my nightstands, which I bought at a garage sale a few years ago and have been wanting to paint ever since:

I promise the full master bedroom reveal is coming SOON! Just gotta get that headboard finished and installed. And let's be honest... everything needs a good dusting with all the construction going on around here!

DIY Chair Makeover Tutorial

Hey everyone! I am so excited to show you my chair makeover today! I bought this chair for $10 (thank you very much, Craigslist) and it was in major disrepair. I had been searching and searching for the perfect chair to go in my newly remodeled master bedroom. Seriously. I searched for weeks. I wanted something with a wooden frame because I wanted to paint it white. I wanted something with wooden arms because I knew I was going to reupholster it and didn't want to mess with reupholstering arms. I wanted something that was sturdy. I wanted something that had a little character to it. I wanted it to be comfortable. And I wanted it to be cheap. Really cheap. And I finally found it!

So here is the before and after (because I know that's what you really want to see).

Let me just tell you that this thing took some work. You know when you read other tutorials about reupholstering furniture and they tell you that they had to remove 6,532 staples? They don't lie. I thought they were lying, but it turns out they tell the truth. I literally got 3 blisters from pulling staples. This is not for the faint of heart.

Anyways, on to the chair. I am going to show you exactly what I did to reupholster this chair. (Aka, this tutorial is going to be long and have lots of pictures. You've been warned.)

The first thing to remember is to take a picture of every step. This helps you put it back together.

I decided to tackle the back of the chair first. Take off any piping around the fabric.

Then start taking off the layers. Try to keep the fabric as intact as possible to use as a template for your new fabric. I had 4 layers. Fabric, foam, mesh, fabric.

I laid out all the layers so I could remember what went first.

Then start pulling those staples. And pulling them. And acquiring blisters. And pulling more staples. My weapons tools of choice were a putty knife (or a 5-in-1 tool), a pair of needlenose pliers, and a bucket to put all the staples and fabric scraps in.

See what I mean about the bajillion staples? All those little white/silver things in that groove are staples.

After that is done, repeat the same process on the seat of the chair. Start with the piping.

Then the fabric. Then the batting. Then the foam. I left the black mesh and the webbing because they were in good condition.

Take a picture of the layers again. (Trust me, this is helpful. Especially if you do this project over a few days' time.)

Now the destructive part is over. On to the paint process! I made sure to sand the chair really well because the finish was already flaking off. Then I wiped it down with a damp rag and let it dry.

After that, prime the wood that will be showing. I did 2 coats of Rustoleum spray primer which only took 1 can. (P.S. Do you like my box props?)

Then start painting. I used Krylon spray paint in gloss white so it would match the rest of my master bedroom. I used almost 2 cans for 3 coats. I probably didn't need to do that much, but wanted to be safe.

Painting finished! Now to put the chair back together...

Start by gathering your supplies. Fabric, foam, batting, cording, scissors, marker, etc. I bought 3 yards of fabric and didn't use nearly that much. If I had to guess, I'd say I used about 1.5 yards. Maybe less.

Lay your fabric out face down and use your old fabric (also face down) as a template for how big it needs to be. I cut mine pretty close to the same size, which was easier than trimming it after it was stapled on.

The next step is to make the cording. I don't own a sewing machine and didn't feel like going to my mom's house to do it, so I made it using a hot glue gun. I measured the cording against the old piping, then cut it a little longer (so I could trim it and make the ends look nice). The fabric strips were about 3" wide. Hot glue the cord to the middle of the fabric. Then fold the fabric around the cord, hot gluing as you go. Trim the excess fabric. Then trim the ends so the new piping is the right length.

Next came the foam. I used leftover foam from my dining chairs, which is actually an egg crate for a twin bed. Lay them out and cut them to size.

I worked on the chair seat first. Fit the foam onto the seat, trimming excess as needed.

Next comes the batting. Fit that over the foam and trim it so it's an inch or so over the edge.

Staple the batting and foam onto the chair.

Then staple on the fabric. I had to have my handy husband help me with this because the staples had to go in that little groove and I couldn't get them in.

Trim the excess fabric off. It doesn't have to look perfect because the piping is going to cover the rough edges.

Use your hot glue gun to glue the piping on. Mine went in that little groove and covered all the staples, so it gives it a finished look.

Step back and admire how good it's looking!

Put the chair back back together using the same process. Add your piping around the edges, and voila. All done!

I love, love, love the way this chair turned out! It's obviously not perfect, since it's my first reupholstery job, but it looks at least 10000x better than it did! What do you think?

And a sneak peek of the chair (and lamp with the ruffled shade) in my room!
